| Usually before
introducing our collections of ethnic tribal jewelry from a specific area we
try to provide some background on the region and its culture. For the sake
of correctness, we like to verify the facts. In the case of the Nomadic
culture we were taken aback when we "discovered" just how vast the area of
the Nomadic culture is. In all honesty, based on our travel experiences,
we've assumed that Nomads are pretty much synonymous with the Bedouins of
Middle East. It isn't so! Nomadic tribes can be found in MANY regions, in
addition to the Mid East. They live in Northern Africa, Tibet, Mongolia,
even China, Indonesia, the Americas, you name it! In those few places not
named here there are OTHER Nomads, more commonly known as Gypsies! But let's
put our own "cultural shock" aside. Thousands of years ago the Nomads lived allover the world. They developed their own unique culture suited to their living conditions and their lifestyle, specifically to their constantly being on the move. They are best known for their extra-ordinary riding skills (be it on a horse or a camel); basket waving, rug making and jewelry. There is a special aura of romanticism attached to all the products created by the Nomads. Consider the environmental conditions under which their products were created! The life of a Nomad is an ongoing process of contending with adversity, surviving it, and managing to remain productive, in spite of it! The items featured below - they hail from Morocco (yes, we carry Berber Jewelry! Thousands of years ago the people we refer to as Berbers - and who were predecessors of the Arabs in Northern Africa - run the country of Mauritania and Numibia), the Mid East, Turkmenistan, and Northern India - weren't created in a comfortable jewelry design studio. Remember while looking at them that they as well as their makers were exposed to the elements. Occasionally the artists went hungry. Sometimes they had to fend wild animals - or worse: today's civilization - while preserving their modest belongings and portable workshops.... The value of the pieces on this page is not their material (we are not certain whether the stones are genuine) but their unique design and unparalleled workmanship! |
